Wedding Venue Melbourne
Wedding Venue in Melbourne for Elegant Ceremonies and Receptions
A Venue Where Your Wedding Day is Closer to Nature
Ballara Receptions has been welcoming weddings in Eltham since 1987 and is still going strong four decades on.
Just thirty minutes from the Melbourne CBD, where the suburbs start to soften into the Yarra Valley foothills, you’ll find three acres of established gardens, an ornamental lake with a gazebo and jetty, a private chapel, and a ballroom that opens straight out onto the grounds.
And when we say your day is the only one that matters – we mean it. Ballara hosts one wedding at a time. No sharing the car park, no negotiating your timeline around someone else’s reception, no second party down the hall. Just your day, your way, from start to finish.

Beautiful Spaces for Ceremony and Reception
Couples arrive imagining different days. Some want mature trees and water behind them. Others want a roof and a proper aisle. Rather than push you towards one, Ballara Receptions offers four ceremony settings, all within walking distance.
Venue for Garden Weddings
The gardens change with the seasons – bare and structural in July, full and lush by February – so no two weddings here look quite the same. And because guests can gather comfortably on the lawn before and after the ceremony, you skip that awkward stretch where everyone’s just standing around waiting for something to happen.
The Ballroom
Chandeliers, neutral tones that work with any colour palette, round tables, white cross-back chairs and a big parquetry dance floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows keep the garden in view right through dinner, and once the sun goes down, the fairy lights outside switch on. Ceremony, photos and reception all happen within the one gate – nobody’s getting in a car between any of it.
Outdoor Lakeside Wedding Ceremonies
Say your vows in front of the ornamental lake, with the gazebo and jetty behind you and weeping willows framing the water. The gentle slope means every guest has a clear view, and the open water bounces light back up – which photographers love a lot more than the dappled shade you get under trees.
Indoor Wedding Chapel
For couples who want a proper aisle and a roof over it, the chapel brings high beamed ceilings that suit the age of the estate. It’s also your safety net – if the weather turns, the ceremony simply moves indoors without touching a single thing in the reception room.
Indoors or Outdoors? Most Couples Do Both
Outdoor ceremonies photograph beautifully and feel relaxed, but they’re weather-dependent, ask older guests to sit out in whatever the day brings, and need a mic that can carry across open ground. Indoors gives you controlled light, guaranteed comfort and acoustics that just work – you trade that for the garden backdrop that many couples picture.
Most couples don’t choose one or the other. Ceremony outside, photos across the grounds, reception indoors. Ballara’s estate is laid out for exactly that flow, so you’re not stuck picking a lane when you book.
Why Choose Ballara Receptions?
Why Choose Ballara Receptions?
Wedding venues in Melbourne are not short on gardens or ballrooms. What separates one venue from the next comes down to things such as the following:
- Family owned and operated at the same address
- One wedding at a time, so the estate is genuinely yours for the day
- Four ceremony settings and a reception room on the one property
- Ceremony, portraits and reception without a convoy between locations
- Accommodation on site, including a private wedding suite
- Onsite parking, so guests are not paying city rates or walking in heels
- Wedding packages built around your guest count rather than sold as fixed tiers
Wedding Packages and Planning Support
Planning a wedding means juggling suppliers, guest lists, timing and a hundred small decisions – a venue that helps carry that load makes the whole thing easier.
Depending on your package, that can include:
- Use of the venue for ceremony and reception
- Setup of tables, chairs and the space itself
- Catering and beverage service
- Styling of the reception
- Event coordination
- Access to photo locations across the estate
We’ve also built long-standing relationships with photographers, celebrants, florists, stylists, musicians and cake makers who know the property inside out.
Wedding Planning Around the Seasons
Spring brings the gardens into full bloom and mild afternoons – just watch out for quick weather changes and Cup Week booking out accommodation across the region.
Summer gives you the longest evenings of the year, with light holding past 8pm – plan for shade and air-conditioning to manage the heat.
Autumn is photographer’s season – foliage, colour, and comfortable temperatures.
Winter is the most budget-friendly time of year and moves the whole celebration indoors, where shorter days and warm lighting become part of the mood rather than a compromise.
Melbourne weather does what it wants. The chapel means you can take the ceremony indoors without touching the reception setup – and that call can be made the morning of, not days out. A real wet-weather plan should seat every guest without anyone having to move furniture that’s already set for dinner.
| Time Before Your Wedding | What to Organise |
|---|---|
| 12 to 18 months | Confirm your venue, preferred date and guest list |
| 9 to 12 months | Secure your celebrant, photographer and entertainment |
| 6 months | Finalise menus, styling and accommodation |
| 2 to 3 months | Confirm guest numbers, seating plans and ceremony details |
| Final weeks | Review timings, supplier schedules and personal arrangements |
Peak Saturdays in spring and autumn go earliest. Winter dates and weekdays are considerably more forgiving, and it is not unusual to secure one well inside twelve months.
Wedding Planning Checklist
As your wedding approaches, these final preparations help everything stay on schedule.
- Confirm final guest numbers with the venue
- Lock the seating plan, which cannot happen until RSVPs close
- Check supplier arrival times against the run sheet
- Walk through the ceremony order with your celebrant
- Arrange bridal party transport and parking
- Write and time the speeches
- Check attire, accessories and anything that needs pressing
Getting these done early is the difference between a relaxed morning and a frantic one.
Guest Comfort and Convenience
It is also about providing a wonderful time for everyone attending that event by making sure that everything is easily accessible to them.
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Parking | On-site parking provides convenient access throughout the day. |
| Accommodation | Eltham and neighbouring suburbs offer accommodation for interstate visitors and guests travelling longer distances. |
| Transport | Direct road access makes travelling from Melbourne and nearby suburbs straightforward. |
| Accessibility | Accessibility requirements can be discussed during planning to ensure suitable arrangements are in place. |
| Local Attractions | Guests staying overnight can enjoy wineries, cafes, walking trails and other attractions throughout the Yarra Valley. |
Taking care of these logistical issues makes sure that everyone in the family or friends’ circle can have a wonderful time without having to worry about traveling.
Photography Locations Across the Estate
A short portrait window goes further when the locations are close together. Every setting below is reachable on foot within a few minutes.
- Lakeside portraits immediately after the ceremony, while guests move to drinks
- Garden pathways for unhurried couple photography
- The ornamental bridge over the water
- Mature trees for shade through the middle of the day
- Open lawn for large family and group shots
- Indoor spaces when the weather closes in or the light drops
Most photographers will push for a portrait session in the half hour before sunset. The light softens, the lake picks it up, and it is the set of images couples usually end up hanging.
Trends in Weddings for Couples
Guest lists have shrunk. Smaller bridal parties, seasonal menus built on local produce, and classic styling that will not date in the album have all become more common than the elaborate set-ups of a decade ago. Unplugged ceremonies come up constantly now, mostly so the front row is watching the couple instead of a phone screen. Almost everyone wants the sunset portraits before heading back in.
Trends move on. The weddings guests still bring up years afterwards are the ones that looked like the couple and nobody else. That argues for choosing from the wedding venues in Melbourne that flex across formats, instead of one designed around a single look you may have gone off by the time the date arrives.
Plan Your Big Day at Ballara Receptions
Every wedding venue in Melbourne looks good in its own gallery. Grounds are difficult to judge from photographs, and scale is impossible to judge from a floor plan.
Call (03) 9431 1503 to arrange a private inspection of Ballara today! Bring a rough guest count & date if you have one, and any images you have been collecting. An hour walking the gardens, the chapel and the ballroom will tell you more than another evening comparing websites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. A private inspection covers the ceremony settings, the ballroom and the grounds, with a coordinator on hand to talk through timings and packages.
Spring and autumn Saturdays at popular wedding venues in Melbourne are usually taken twelve to eighteen months out. Weekday and winter dates open up considerably, and booking early mainly buys you choice over your suppliers rather than the venue itself.
Yes. The coordinators have worked across a wide range of traditions, and the run sheet gets built around the rituals that cannot move rather than the other way round.
Yes. Raise allergies and dietary needs while the menu is being planned so the kitchen can build around them properly rather than adding a late alternate plate.
Often, yes, though some services come through the preferred supplier network. Ask at consultation, because the answer differs by category.
Yes. Walking the ceremony through beforehand sorts out positions and timing, and it noticeably settles anyone reading or speaking on the day.
An estimated guest count, a preferred date or two, a budget range, and any inspiration images. That is enough for a coordinator to tell you what is realistic rather than what is possible.

The team was incredibly organised, professional, and attentive throughout the entire planning process and on the day itself. They made everything run smoothly, allowing us to relax and truly enjoy our wedding.

I would say if you have any function book with Ballara.

From the very start of the process, from arranging meetings, to organising the last minute details, there was sense of efficiency and professionalism in their communication. Ballara truly listened with attention and care to our wishes and offered expert suggestion to what would best bring our vision into reality. Their adaptability to accommodate our needs and requests (even alterations on the day itself) were first-class and really contributed towards the event being received so well by guests.
We felt safe with Popy and the team directing operations and, in hindsight, wouldn’t have entrusted anyone else to realise our dream.

From our initial tour, to the food tastings and expo days and finally to our big day, we have loved visiting and coming to Ballara every time.
Tanya, Christine and Popy have been incredible to be in contact with, no question is a silly question and they made us so secure knowing that they are experts at what they do and that they will ensure our day is perfect!

I was given Aleisha as my coordinator for the wedding day, and she was an absolute gem. I was so blessed to have her and concierge Hannah by our side. They made sure everything ran smoothly, were so professional and understanding, and handled the day with such care.
